Welcome Back to the 2015-16 Calendar Year

October 1, 2015

Welcome, each and every piano and voice student! It is exciting to embark on a journey toward becoming a musician and I look forward to sharing it with you. Before we begin however, it is important to get a few administrative items clarified.

All lessons begin on Thursday, September 10th, and conclude on Wednesday, June 22nd. Please note though, that there are two breaks interspersed throughout the year:

  • Christmas Break – Tuesday, December 22nd through Sunday, January 3rd
  • March Break – Friday, March 4th through Saturday, March 12th

As well, certain holidays are observed. Please see calendar for specific dates within each month.

With respect to “winter storm days” my studio is always open and, due to its size, make-up lessons cannot be arranged. Please use your discretion when deciding whether to attend. In relation to other reasons for missed lessons, make-ups are arranged when I miss lessons for any reason, or else they are refunded; otherwise, make-ups are arranged due only to students’ illnesses, family emergencies, or some unique extenuating circumstances pre-arranged by students and myself, and all upon the students’ request. Students are eligible to upwards of 2 make up lessons per term.

Please note that there are a few mock-concerts, dress rehearsals, and group lessons interspersed throughout the year. These are good opportunities for students to present their work in small and intimate, but public settings, helping to insure success at the major, often larger, and generally more significant performance venues like: the Community Xmas Concert, Fredericton Music Festival, NB Provincial Music Festival, End of the Year Concert, and formal examinations. There are very important learning outcomes with respect to these exercises and as such are part of the teaching calendar and tuition schedule. Students are required to participate.

This being my 10th year of teaching piano/voice in Fredericton, my fees are as follows:

  • ¾ hour voice/piano = $35.00
  • 1 hour voice/piano = $40.00
  • 1.5 hour voice/piano = $60.00

*Please note that there will be no more half hour teaching slots.

As well, to help with some of the administration costs I charge a registration fee which is due the first day of instruction. It is a once per year fee of $25.00 per family. Furthermore, due at the last lesson of September and dated for the last lesson of each month, I require a series of post dated cheques (1/month for 10 months, September through June, or 1/ month from Sept-Dec, 1/ month from Jan.-Feb., and 1/ month from March-June) to be submitted. So that you can calculate exactly each month’s fee, please see the detailed calendar of dates provided. All lessons are to be covered and paid in full within each monthly postdated cheque.

Students are responsible for purchasing music. (I purchase the music at a discount and pass that on to you, thereby asking you to reimburse me.) Supplementary material from my library may be assigned from time to time. Additional music may be purchased at any time and brought to the lesson.

I provide free dictation books to record the students’ weekly homework requirements. They are extremely important tools to help students stay on task and up to date with respect to progress. As well, because there are so many verbal instructions that happen within the voice lessons themselves, it’s important for singers to bring recording devices to all lessons, with which to reference and practice at home. The actual devices are at the discretion of the students.

I am looking forward to a fabulous year!

With musical progress in mind,

Ross Simonds RMT, BM (Dalcroze Eurhythmics Specialist Candidate)

PS It has been a very productive summer. One of the things I’ve been wanting to accomplish for the past few years and have finally gotten around to doing is building a website to help facilitate communication and foster further learning opportunities. Hopefully, it will be up and running by Oct. 1. I will be sure to let you know when it’s live. Stay tuned. Once it is, all of this material that I send out will be on the website for you to check whenever you need. For this fall, however, I’ll send all the necessary information to you as I always do—through individual emails. Thank you for your patience as I walk through the final stages of getting this valuable tool working.
